In today’s Proverbs 31 devotion, I referred to the verse from Proverbs 4:23, which says “Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.” (NCV) I shared about a season of life where my thoughts were running rampant with worry, discouragement, fear and negativity and I realized those thoughts had begun running and controlling not only my life, but my happiness. In fact, my thoughts often made me feel as if I were sinking mentally, emotionally — and at times, even spiritually.
I can honestly say that had I not depended on God during this difficult season of life, and had He not helped me learn to take my thoughts captive, depend on Him for strength, and look to Him for peace and joy when life seemed too difficult and heartbreaking to manage, I don’t know where or how I would be today. So many times I felt like I was sinking, but God was always there to pull me back up every time I felt like I was getting pulled under with the current of negative thinking.
During my prayer time, months ago, I came across Hebrews 6:19 which says “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” From that point forward, I have chosen to anchor my heart in God, instead of anchoring it in problems, thoughts, feelings and emotions which cause me to sink. I have learned first hand that hearts anchored in God don’t sink, and that anchoring our hearts in God has to begin with transforming the way we think, so we will be in control of how we feel and live.
Anchoring our hearts in God equips us to stand firm when we feel like sinking; to persevere when we feel like we want to give up; to try to have a positive perspective about a negative problem; and to be filled with peace and joy even when life is difficult.
I truly believe the message of Unsinkable Faith is one that every person can use to radically transform the way they think, feel and live. When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at will change. Perspective is everything, and when we let go of our negative perspectives and embrace God’s perspective instead, a powerful transformation begins in the mind.
Our thoughts have power, my friend. Power to run our lives and change who we are. It is our choice as to how our thoughts change us- for the worse, or for the better. A negative mind will never lead to a negative life, but a positive mind opens the door for a positive life to blossom.
If you’re desperate for a change in your life but haven’t known how to kickstart that change … if it seems your circumstances will never change and you’re convinced you can never be happy again until they do … if you’re longing to grow stronger in your faith and start living a more positive life by putting negative, discouraging or bitter thoughts and feelings behind you … if you’re ready and excited to embrace a fresh new life of peace, joy, hope and happiness, even if your circumstances remain the same … then my deepest prayer is that Unsinkable Faith will be what God uses to draw you closer to Him and help you discover that you can have unsinkable faith too and that a more positive, blessed life is only one positive prayer away.
