I have found in my life that I am often hard of hearing. Spiritual hearing that is.

God probably thinks I have some kind of hearing disorder at times, but thankfully, He never fails to keep at it until I get it!

For the past several months, I’ve found myself being thankful for little things. Little things that I thought I should write down, but that seemed kind of silly. So I would mentally appreciate the small blessing, and move on with my day.

But then God seemed to be pounding the message of “praise Him in all things” into my brain.

Over a two week period, my Jesus Calling devotion mentioned several things about praising God for specific things, not just a blanket  prayer of “thanks Lord for everything”. Then a friend on Facebook posted about a new bible study – about praising God for specific things. Then my Sunday School lesson later that week was about praising God during hard times. I heard songs on the radio about praising God.

Then I  decided to download a new book onto my Ipad, and randomly chose 1000 Gifts, by Ann Voskamp. I didn’t fully understand what the book was about even though I had heard about it.  Many of you may have already read it before – I’m just a little behind the times!

But as I began reading through it, I realized it was God’s perfect, divine timing that I chose this book on this specific day – because it was all about praise.  It’s not just about thanking God for gifts we usually tend to be thankful for –  but instead, gifts we all too often overlook.  I finally understood that God had been whispering to me through a variety of ways, that He was calling me to develop an attitude of thankfulness.

As I read through the chapters, the words of this book saturated my heart. Not only because of the eloquent way Ann writes, but because it was as if it gave me permission to be thankful for things that most people would think were silly and insignificant.

Like the birds I hear singing outside my bedroom window every morning when I wake up.

Like when my teenage daughter gives me a big hug before she leaves for school.

… when my college age daughter calls  me just to chat and tell me about her day

… the smell of my son’s bedroom, a mixture of cologne and his boyish scent

… the way sunshine streaks across the kitchen in late afternoon

… the aroma of laundry drying in the dryer

… how good it feels to sink into my soft warm bed every night

… when my husband texts me just to say ‘I luv u’

… steaming hot coffee with flavored creamer and whip cream on top

… piles of shoes on the steps needing to be taking upstairs to bedrooms

I could go on and on,  and on, so I have decided to start my list this week of gifts and blessings that peak awareness in my heart, no matter how big or small, silly or insignificant they seem. I am confident it’s not going to take long to get to 1000, but when I do, I don’t plan on stopping there.

Ephesians 5:20 says “And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  This verse doesn’t say give thanks for all the things you got that you really wanted, or answered prayers, or when God does something great. It says “everything.”

In the book, Ann says “I would never experience the fullness of my salvation until I expressed the fullness of my thanks every day,…”  This sentence struck a chord in my heart,  further fueling my desire to begin consciously being more thankful. If my deep and detailed daily thankfulness not only pleases God, but will also fill my heart with more joy and help me experience the fullness of my salvation, I can’t wait to get started! Just the thought of expressing thankfulness for the tiniest of gifts makes me excited!

1000 giftsI would love to give away two of these books on my blog, because I sincerely believe in the necessity and benefits of expressing gratitude to God in all things. This beautiful book is a perfect way to help us start developing a habit of thankfulness.

To enter to win, leave a comment ON MY BLOG stating three things you have found yourself being thankful for today or this week.  Randomly drawn winner will be announced on March 5th.

    1. that God loves me

I am thankful Tracie for you, thankful that you share your thoughts and feelings with all of us out there that are not very eloquent and do not know how to express what we are thinking or feeling. My church has a women’s Wednesday morning bible study and they are currently studying “1000 Gifts, by Ann Voskamp” but b/c I work full time I am unable to attend but I would LOVE to read this book. For Lent rather than give something up I really want to ‘take something on’ and have been looking for something and I think that an attitude of thankfulness is just the thing. I plan to get up an hour early every morning and dedicate that hour to time with God! Thank you Tracie!!

Good morning Tracie, thank you for an opportunity to win such a nice book. I am thankful for being given a writing opportunity this week. I have been hired to write devotionals on a new site that has just been newly launched and the administrator gave me my own section. I am thankful that God is using me by doing something I love to do and I’ll be paid for it. Praise God. I am thankful for waking up today.

  17. Delinda on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 9:43 am

I like you have found I am thankful for the smallest of things. One being just spending time with my grandson who is 3 and listening to how God is teaching him every day. The things children say are just amazing to me.
Second – The snow we had recently. I love going out in the snow and just listening – it is so silent. You can hear the snow flakes fall. God says to Be Still and Listen – this is the perfect time. Thirdly I love hearing the birds singing and watching them fly around, especially the colorful birds.

These are God’s love letters to me every day. I have more recently become aware of them and I try to read them over and over daily. If we are still and Watch and Listen, we will see all of the beautiful love notes he sends us all through the day. He gives them when I need them most. God is my hero!!!

  18. Susan Moore on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 9:45 am

I am thankful every morning that I can get out of bed, on this side of the earth, without help from anyone but God. My poor mom can’t. She relies on someone to bathe her and then pull her up and then to sit her, then to dress her, then to put her in a chair that wheels her to her living room chair, and then to set the tv on for her and then have someone come and fee her. Mom’s deaf and has Parkinson and a slew of diseases now. That’s my sister who does that for my mom so I’m thankful for my sister and the blessing she is because she also has a family she cares for. I’m asking God in the past few months to let me be thankful for blessings I don’t see through the day (because I know they are there) so open my eyes and let me hear. Sue

  19. Carol Thomas on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 9:45 am

Clean running water after spending 2 weeks in Ghana, Africa and then 2 weeks in Thailand. That my son and daughter and grandchildren are safely in the hands of God’s protection and they know Him. That God has placed on my heart to educate people in Michigan of what human trafficking is and how to pray against this evil!

I know you wanted 3 but I have a 4th. Thank you God for fresh brewed ice tea!

I am so very thankful for the sun shining on me as a drive to work. I feel it is God telling me good morning. I’m also thankful for this long hard winter, it is serving a very needed purpose and we all need to rember that. And I am very grateful for my two very large furry companions (dogs) who set an example of loving unconditionally as we all should. I have a tendency to lump my gratefulness together in my morning prayer but I will try to be more specific with my thanks from now on. Thanks, Tracie.

I am thankful for my grand children, all their hugs and kisses even their whining and crying, for my daughter and her friends for all they help me do, my son-in-law for just being him, my husband, my friends, my pets, and even my enemies because they remind me how great God is.

  31. Hope Mc on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 10:48 am

This is interesting to me. A few years ago I started a private Facebook group where people were to post something they were thankful for each day. After about 6 months I stopped adding to it because I was the only one doing it in the group. A few days ago I came across it because I hadn’t deleted the group.
So I am thankful I didn’t delete it. There are so many good nuggets in there even though they are several years old.
I am thankful for proverbs 31 and their online bible studies.
I am thankful for my family and the work Jesus is doing in everyone of them.

I am thankful that God has blessed me with a wonderful son! After 5 miscarriages my son makes me thankful for all God has blessed me with.

I, just last year, discovered Ann Voskamp’s 1000 gifts idea/Joy Dare Challenge. I haven’t read her book, but I printed out the “promptings” for the year and refer to them regularly. What a splendid idea to help us recognize the daily blessings we have… no matter how small!!! God created them all and blesses us with so much each day; we just need to slow down and take the time to recognize them and Praise Him for them!
I am so thankful for: 1) starting an exercise program again and strengthening this body that God has entrusted me with (it’s been a long road after dealing with breast cancer and foot problems and getting out of the exercise habit, but I am coming back!) 2) Robins! I sooo love to see and hear the robins again after a cold winter; spring surely can’t be far behind! 3) I am thankful for the much needed moisture we are getting and the sunshine with it! God truely is great, let us Praise Him each and every day.

  39. Lynn Bowman on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 11:11 am

Hi Tracie! What a wonderful God we serve! It will be hard to stop at just three things. For today I am thankful for my husband, Geno, who brought me breakfast this morning; I am thankful for the heat that is now working in our office building on this chilly day; and I am always thankful for a Father that loves me unconditionally. Peace and Blessings to you!

  40. Paige on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 11:11 am

I’m choosing to be thankful for the timely visit from my sister and her family. Although its tempting to focus on the sadness I feel as she leaves to go back 6 hours away tomorrow, God arranged for her to be THIS particular week. A week I have been under tremendous attack by the enemy. She has spoken truth, encouragement and hope into my heart this week and I am so thankful.

I’m thankful for the running feet I heard this morning as I sat in “my place” at 5:30am talking to God this morning and watching sky turn pink. The thump thump thump of little feet on the steps, the sleepy head peeking around the corner of the kitchen to see if he will be told its too early to be up. The mop of unruly bedhair tickling my chin as I squeeze him close in his tight legged PJs that will no longer be cool here in a few months.

I’m thankful for my hard-working hubby who won’t be able to run the thousand errands I have tomorrow with both boys in tow. As much as I wish he were with us, I’m so proud of him and how hard he works. And so thankful for a stable job.

    Thank you Jesus for today.

I’m thankful for my house & it has been a great place for all our family to come together for holidays since it’s very open from the kitchen where the food is! But now I’m thankful it can be passed on to our daughter & her kids since it’s near good schools for them & has many rooms we no longer need! Then I’m thankful we have another house we can move to not too far away. Just praying this is in God’s will & the process will come together soon! My daughter’s current house Must sell first.

    Tracie,

This week has had it’s good and bad but I am so thankful. One is when my sweet 10 year old daughter looks up to me and says,”You’re pretty!’. Two is that two friends sent me unexpected gifts. Three is that being nearly homebound, I was able to get out of the house today. I hope I win because I have wanted this book for awhile.

    Blessings to u all,

I’m most thankful this week for:

    * spending time laughing with my husband
*God’s provision when things seem impossible
*getting an email from a friend I hadn’t heard from in awhile

Thanks for offering such a fun giveaway- it’s been so neat to see how others are thankful this week.

  52. Bobbi on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 12:29 pm

I’m thankful for my husband of 31 years who makes me coffee every morning. I’m thankful for my 9 year old daughter who tells me I’m the best mom in the world (even though I’m not even close to being the best mom in the world.). I’m thankful for me 3 grown children who are healthy, well-adjusted, productive adults and continue to bless me everyday. I’m also thankful for my cute grandson who brightens the room just by walking into it! (I know that’s 4 things, but I’m very blessed!) 🙂

  53. Jeni on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 12:31 pm

God has been truly teaching me to be thankful for all things. It has been especially evident in the past few weeks via daily devotionals from Proverbs 31 and Jesus Calling.
I am thankful for Proverbs 31 and me friend Christie that introduced me to it.
I am thankful for finally being able to let go of my past and that I am learning not to harbor anger and resentment.
I am thankful for the new youth minister at our church and the opportunity to listen to my daughter sing in our awesome youth band. It gives me great pleasure and is a true blessing.

  54. Amber M on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 12:49 pm

I am right in this spot with you. So busy all the time. The things I am so thankful for (while not small at all) I am around so much it could really easily be taken for granted. Getting to be a single mom to my two beautiful and awesome kiddos. The near and dear friends that never left my side and support me daily. And those little feelings of peace that let you catch your breath in the mist of a stressed, hurried and non stop semi chaotic life. TYJ!

  55. Deana on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 12:51 pm

I gave this book to friend about a year ago and she shared it changed her life. Just by her sharing made me aware of my often lack of gratitude. On Thanksgiving she shared it with her family the parts that she wrote about them and it was profound. So my three things that come to mind now to be thankful for are:
    1. The women who, write, blog, speak and share their hearts so that others may grow in the grace & knowledge of our Lord. (and how easily accessible it is!!)
    2. God loves me enough to say ‘no’ when something seems so ‘right’ because He knows better.
    3. I’m thankful that God has revealed to me my DREAM JOB and its all falling into place so quickly! The pieces are all fitting together.

  56. Becky Wedekind on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 12:52 pm

I am thankful that my son’s cowboy boots fit my husband’s feet “like a glove”. We lost our son last month. Just being able to see his boots at the front door or to see my husband where them helps me smile and remember our son.

    • Dottie on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 3:17 pm

Thank you for sharing that special memory of your son’s cowboy boots. Somewhere in my sons moves that he made over the last year, he lost my deceased husband’s boots. Maybe they will be found so he can wear them proudly. Thank you, again.

I am thankful for the doctors God has placed in my path. I am thankful for the rain. I am thankful for “down time” God has provided for me that allows me to sit and read my emails so I can be reminded how much I have to be thankful for!

  58. Lynn W. on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Although I feel that I am thankful, I had never thought of it quite like you stated…being thankful for everything and being mindful of every detail. I am thankful for insightful blogs that challenge my way of thinking. I am thankful for a puppy that brings joy to me daily. I am thankful for a warm house/office when it is so cold outside. I could go on and on…thankfully!

  59. Crystal Storms on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 2:07 pm

In the beginning of the year, I developed the habit of writing in my journal 3 things I am thankful for using Ann Voskamp’s prayer prompts. This practice has also helped me look beyond the easy or normal things to open my eyes to all of the blessings God has graced me with.
    Today I am thankful for:
    1. A long car ride that gives me extra time with my husband
    2. An overflow of God that compelled me to write His truths
    3. Knowing I’m blessed in the little ways as well as some pretty big ones too

  60. Cathy on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 2:22 pm

    I’m thankful
that God loves so much that he doesn’t always give me what I ask for
incredible men and women of God who share His word in a multitude of ways in the plethora of technology — such riches so readily available!
the promise of spring in longer days

    I’m SO blessed!

I’m thankful my allergies to my medicine didn’t put me in the hospital. Thankful for my husband’s love especially when I’m sick and I ask for something chocolate. I get a hug, a smile and chocolate. I’m thankful God breaks through the gray clouds and sun breaks through when I praise His name and thank Him for each day.

  62. Dottie on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 3:15 pm

I am so thankful for God’s faithfulness in all of my children since my husband died. One of my sons is being consistent at going to young adult group, and he is also desiring to go on to finish school. That is God. My youngest daughter (who didn’t like being in the nursery) was holding a baby last week, and working in the nursery. God did that in her heart. I am thankful that my journey that I am on is not a mistake. it is all part of God’s eternal plan for my life. Thank you for challenging me to focus on what I am forever thankful for. We have a God who truly will never leave us nor forsake us.

  63. Christine on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Ok, my reasons may sound a bit odd, but here goes…One, I’m thankful that everything went smoothly this morning for my student’s sociology wedding which is a huge undertaking, and I prayed so much about it and felt tremendous peace and calm over it; two, I’m thankful that even though I just spilled my tea all over the desk right now, it only got the mouse, the desk, and completely just missed the laptop!; and three, I’m sooooooooooooooooo thankful for each night that I can gather with my husband and two girls at the dinner table and just “be” with them for at least that time after such long days at work and school.

  64. Anne B on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 5:58 pm

I am thankful for how healthy my kids are right now, I’m thankful to have a good friend to talk with, and I’m also thankful (oddly) for some good smelling hand soap!! Some big things, and a small one. I’ve heard a lot about the book but have yet to read it!

Thanks for this reminder to thank God in everything, Tracie. Here are a few of mine….

I am thankful for sunshine on a freezing cold day … spring is almost here!
I am thankful that today is pizza/movie night – family time and opportunity to relax after a busy week. Also means fewer dishes and cleaner kitchen! 🙂
This week I was thankful for beautiful worship songs to turn my eyes to Jesus when I felt discouraged and down.
I am thankful for God’s provision time and time again.

    Blessings to you all!

I am thankful for sunshine, dogs, and time with friends!

  67. Sue on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 6:24 pm

I was reading Charles Spurgeon’s book, Holy Spririt Power. In chapter two of this modern vocabuary version of this ( Whitaker House), he goes into depth on how the Holy Spirit can influence our mind, will, and heart toward the Lord. This greatly encouraged me, since I have been praying for years for our adult son to come back to faith. Sometimes if we look at it in the natural it looks like a permanent state or condition. This showed me, that we can’t convince people, but we can share and ask specificlly, that the Spirit, convict, teach, enlighten, and reveal Jesus.

  68. Elaine Segstro on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 6:44 pm

I am thankful to have been married to a godly man for over 34 years, thankful for my health (I’m doing a term position now for someone who is suffering from pneumonia and bronchitis), and thankful for the sunshine. It’s so terribly cold here, but seeing the sun on the sparking snow is ‘snow’ beautiful 🙂

Ironic to read your blog entry just now! I am thankful today for the warmth of my dog laying beside

I am going to list 3 things I am thankful for at work since it’s been pretty stressful around there lately:
-that my current boss is better than my old one
-that I am allowed to adjust my work hours during the school year so I can take my girls to school every morning
    -that I enjoy my work

  77. Suzi on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 7:50 am

My 3 are having Face Time on Ipad that allows me to have storytime once a week with my grandlove in a different state. We are reading The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew and this week the poor Pepper family was given a pat of butter by their parson which was carefully wrapped in a cloth and was a delicacy to these children. My husband and I have been blessed financially enough to help our adult children in ways our parents could not and when discussing how much we should do for them last night he said, “we do it because WE have a pat of butter”. I love his generous spirit and am grateful both for him and for having enough butter to share with our children.

  78. Stephanie Bankhead on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 8:21 am

    Today, I am thankful for:
    – the quiet morning to spend time with Jesus and read my Bible
    – hearing the birds singing outside my window…we started with one nest and 2 birds who had babies and over the years now have 3 nests of birds that are all socially related to each other and so much fun to observe. They have become like our little backyard family.
    – the beautiful house that we have raised our family in (today is cleaning day for me and I’m determined to be thankful that I have a beautiful house to clean!)

I am thankful for sooo many things that it’s hard to pick just three… for God’s faithfulness toward me at all times, for my wonderful, beautiful family that bless me so much daily and in so many different ways, for the beauty of creation which surrounds me and keeps reminding me of my heavenly Father, Creator and author of all things, Who is in control of every detail of this universe and still has time to be in control of the details of my life!

I am thankful that I was made for MORE.

  93. Mary T on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 9:05 pm

Tracie, I was also touched by the Jesus Calling devotion of Friday February 21st. The very next day, I opened my Bible and there was Daniel 6 and a devotion from Lysa TerKeurst titled “no more pit dwelling”. I began to thank God all day long as soon as I observed or thought of anything that I was thankful for. During the week, the beauty of “a thankful heart” began to fill my days with joy! I will have to read this book! I almost bought it a couple of months ago, but opted for “Whispers of Hope” by Beth Moore. Anyway, 3 things that I am thankful for are: 1. My big giant coffee cup, a gift from a friend, that says “all I need is faith and a cup of strong coffee”; 2. My favorite journal, they had 2 left at the book store on sale so I bought them; and 3. My cup of hot cocoa just before I go to bed! Lots more but those 3 came to mind! Thanks for sharing your thankful heart! God bless!
