Elvis Isn’t The Only One Who Gets All Shook Up

ElvisElvis was all shook up over love, but when we feel all shook up around this time of year, it might be the holidays to blame.

The lyrics of this popular Elvis song, All Shook Up, are somewhat comical and I find it funny how the feelings he sings about seem all too familiar as the number of shopping days gets less and less. I won’t list all the lyrics, and some of you may know them by heart, but a few of the lines go like this:

What’s wrong with me?……………  My friends say I’m actin wild as a bug

My hands are shaky and my knees are weak ……… Please don’t ask me what’s on my mind

I’m a little mixed up, but I’m feelin’ fine …………… My heart beats so it scares me to death!

My tongue gets tied when I try to speak …………. My insides shake like a leaf on a tree

Have you found yourself feeling or acting like this during the holidays?  Maybe not yet this year, because Thanksgiving is still a couple weeks away and Christmas hasn’t really hit yet, but trust me – the shaking up is coming!

The holidays can make the lyrics of this song be a reality in our own lives. We gradually begin to feel shaken up, actin wild, weak and shaky, irritated, mixed up, having an increased heart rate, tongue tied – and if anyone asks how we are doing – we say we’re feelin’ fine!

Today I am guest posting over at the Circles of Faith blog and want to invite you to hop over there and visit.  My devotion talks about how David was all shook up when Saul was after him, but how he had confidence in his God and embraced His peace during the chaos.

The last line of this Elvis song says “There’s only one cure for this body of mine. That’s to have the girl that I love so fine!” In real life, there’s only one cure for our shaken up bodies too, but it’s  Jesus.  David discovered that in Psalm 16:8 when he expressed “I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.” And God wants us to discover that too.
