Giving God The Wheel

While doing some research recently, I came across a yahoo conversation that went something like this:

QUESTION: “Is God the steering wheel of our lives, or the spare tire?”

ANSWER: “God is the steering wheel, but when we blow a tire, He is the spare tire that gets us back on track.”

I thought that was such a neat statement, with the exception of comparing our soverign, holy and majestic God to the likes of a dirty old spare tire, of course. But the analogy itself was thought provoking.

Have you ever really thought about what it means to give God the steering wheel of your life? Does it simply mean letting go when things get out of control, like we hear about in that country song called Jesus Take The Wheel?

Surely Jesus wants the wheel during the entire drive, not just when the car (aka life) gets out of control. Or maybe we are a back seat driver, and we offer to give Jesus the wheel, but then we try to control the wheel from the backseat or offer unsolicited and unneeded and advice. In fact, we might even try to take control of the gas pedal too, because we are just not getting places quite as quickly as we would like!
