It Finally Hit Me

Last night was Senior Youth night at my church where we have been attending for twenty years. There was no formal program, just fellowship and laughter, and a chance for the graduating Seniors who were present to sit on stage and answer a few questions about their memories of church events, each other, family and God moments.

photoThis group of amazing Godly teens have been going to church together since they were in the infant nursery. And now they sat on stage, sharing God’s truths and expressing maturity about faith, family and future so transparently, that one couldn’t help but be moved to tears.

Trust me, I was. I actually didn’t expect to get emotional during this service, but it finally hit me. I think I’ve been in denial that my second baby girl was graduating, even though we’ve been making plans for it for many months.

As she sat in her chair on stage, looking all grown up and beautiful, and sharing her heart, it was just about more than this sometimes emotionally unstable mama’s heart could take.

But I couldn’t help but think about the devotion from last week, and how timely it was to remember that this is just another season in which God has us.  Rather than feeling sad over the fact that she’s going off to college soon, I can feel elated, knowing that she has eternity in her heart and a love for the Lord.  What peace it brought me to see her reminiscing about all God has done for her, and recognizing the treasure of true Godly friends and the impact of Godly role models in her life, and knowing that these are what will help her stay grounded in her faith in college even during the hardest of times.

One leader reminded them that when they go to college, they may be required to stand in the gap and do what’s right according to Christ – even if they have to stand in the gap all alone.  But we know, they won’t really be alone at all because God will always be there, standing in the gap with them, and maybe even holding them up.

If you have a child graduating from high school or college this year, I’d love to pray for you as I pray for my Kaitlyn. Leave a quick comment with their name, and I’ll lift up all their names in prayer this week.

As our children go out into the world of college or career, nothing is more important than covering them in prayer.

If you haven’t had a chance to read through the comments from last week’s post about enjoying the seasons of parenting, then I want to encourage you to do so! What incredible bits of wisdom are shared, for moms of all ages. A special thanks to everyone who took the time to share their challenges and their life lessons with all of us.

Yes. Some of these times are joyfully tearful and some are painfully tearful. Trying to praise God in the midst of both.

It is an heart tugging season to be in, launching kids. Letting go and trusting is not easy for us moms. We have sent off three. The other 2 will be graduating in 3 and 4 years. I am praying they will be ready. In the mean time, still parenting them all in 5 different ways.

I enjoyed your post this week. It made me look at all the kids my son graduated with just a few weeks ago. I pray that he left a Godly image with each of them that will draw them closer to God. I pray that he has the desire to draw closer to God himself. I pray each day that my husband & I have lead our 2 sons in the way that God would have us to. Our oldest is Matthew & he is in college, our youngest, who just graduated is Michael. I would appreciate you praying for both of them. Pray that God leads them & they listen to his calling.

My son, Hunter , grduated from school last Thursday, May 22. I was so full of all kinds of emotions and the next morning when I sat down to read my devotions the Proverbs 31 devotion was your devotion regarding “Enjoying the Season’s of Parenting”; I cannot tell you what a blessing of comfort, wisdom and knowledge your words brought to me! Hunter is my only child and I love him so much. I thank God for him, he has brought so much joy into our lives. After, reading your devotion last week, my whole outlook on his graudating has changed as now I am excited and looking for what God has planned for this new chapter of his life! Please remember him in your prayers! I will me praying for your daughter Kaitlyn and all of the others who have posted that have children graduating.. Praying for God to bless all of them and keep them under His wings, provide them wisdom, knowledge in His word, in life and school. Thank you!

My daughter, Rachel, graduated from Elon University last weekend. Please pray for her as she continues to look for a “real” job. I appreciated your post about the Season’s of Parenting, so true!

  10. Toni Lowery on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 10:00 am

Alex Lowery is my son, my baby, my “caboose” who is graduating next Friday. He has not been making wise choices over the last year. I am so proud of him, but please pray that he will get back on track with his relationship with Christ. It is hard knowing that they have to choose Christ on their own and grow in their faith just like we had to do. We can’t choose for them. I just have to trust in God’s promises that if we bring them up in the admonition of the Lord they will not depart from it. Pray that I will “not exasperate my children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:3-5.” I tend to badger and lecture to try and force my will on them, and that doesn’t help.
    Thanks!

My 3rd son Luke is graduating June 28. We are in Canada so I think we may be later. We have done this 2x already and have one more boy after this to go. Yes it seems to have gone so wildly fast but thank-you for the reminder to enjoy the season. I recently took him shopping for grad…..Nothing like you have to do for girls!!!haha We had so much fun getting socks that will make a “statement” to go with his tie. He is very different than is older brothers!!!He is wearing his Vans rather than dress shoes…..He is the 3rd boy.haha I will treasure the memories of that day just spending time with him!!Thanx for praying. I also will be praying for you guys too. So glad God holds their future in HIs hands.

  14. Deanna Sexton on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 12:43 pm

Nicholas Sexton is our second of three sons graduating from high school. In the Fall he will be heading to ETSU (East Tennessee State Univerity). Great young man but aware of challenges he’ll be facing in college as a student athlete. Prayers that he will also stand in the gap and continue to do what is right as a Christian.

My first born child Blake graduates next Fri. I was a 17 year old mom when he was born so in a sense we grew up together. The has a dream of playing baseball in college and I pray his dream comes true. Pray for God to guide him and surround him with Godly people as he ventures into this world.

My daughter Macie would be graduating tomorrow 5/30/14, but she will be walking across that stage in heaven. Your story was very beautiful and I just hope that I could have raised her the way you described your daughter. I hope your daughter has a wonderful & blessed life.

  19. Wendy on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 7:20 am

My second child graduated a few weeks ago. I have to admit it hasn’t affected me as much as the first did. I’m guessing it will when we move her to college. Prayers for Caryn. She will need the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and protect her as she moves into this new era. She’ll be attending a large, state University. I pray that she is able to make a group of Christian friends quickly and that she is wise and discerning in her choices.
