Three Days and Counting …

BREAK THE BAD HABIT OF NEGATIVE THINKING

The popular belief is that it takes twenty-one days to break a habit, but science has proven that breaking habits sometimes takes a lot longer than that, and definitely requires a lot of intentional effort.

In fact, according to some studies, it can take anywhere from two to eight months to really get a new habit engrained in our minds. But don’t let that discourage you! Instead, keep that in mind when you feel like you’re stumbling in your efforts to change and frustration begins to set in, because anything worth achieving takes time. Give yourself permission to mess up and mercy when you do, and allow for plenty of time to build new tendencies of thinking. Habits are a process, not an event. But the more important something is to us, the more likely we’ll succeed long term.

Elliott Berkman, Neuroscientist and Assistant Professor from the University of Oregon said, “People who want to kick their (bad) habit for reasons that are aligned with their personal values will change their behaviour faster than people who are doing it for external reasons such as pressure from others,” If something is important enough to us and especially if it aligns with our faith and our deepest desires for peace and a healthy, happy life, we are more likely to make the effort to change.

Negative thinking is nothing more than a bad habit, and bad habits are meant to be broken.

In Chapter Five of Unsinkable Faith, I explain three critical steps to permanently transforming our minds and our thought patterns.  These steps are based on 2 Corinthians 10:5, which says We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. “   This is a popular verse, but many Christians struggle with what this verse actually means and grapple with questions like, What does it mean to take our thoughts captive? How do we capture our thoughts? How does one transform their mind to be more like Christ?  How can our thoughts patterns be “obedient?”  In the book, I answer these questions and you’ll be amazed at how three little steps can absolutely transform your habitual ways of thinking. You’ll also enjoying reading the stories of women who have already found success from using them.

For all the information about what these three steps are and how to implement them into your life and overcome the habit of negativity, get your copy of Unsinkable Faith and read this whole crucial life changing chapter.

The more you practice being positive, the more natural and habitual it becomes. As that new habit builds, what began with concerted effort and intentionality becomes something you do without even thinking about it. A new you will begin to emerge, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the result. 🙂

Until now, you may have come to believe happiness and peace are not possible for you because of the adversities in your life, the fears in your heart, the skeletons in your closet or the hurt you experienced in the past. Maybe you’ve allowed negative thinking to become part of who you are, like I did at one time, and deem it an impossible task to break the habit of negative thinking and truly change. But just as Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “”Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” Including breaking free from the bad habit of negativity.

Forming new habits and breaking old ones takes time and intentionality, but as we apply ourselves to the principles that are proven to transform our minds, God will work in us to make that change become a reality. Then one day we’ll suddenly realize we no longer have to try to break the habit, because our faith has gently ushered us into a more positive mindset and a more positive life.
