How to Take God on Vacation With You (& special bonus giveaway!)

packingIf you are visiting from today’s Proverbs 31 Devotion “Avoiding a Spiritual Stumble”, then welcome!  On my bloggy home here, we are in the middle of a Summer Survival series, and today’s post ties right in with the message I shared in today’s P31 devotion.

When life is busy, it’s easy to stumble in our faith as responsibilities, pressures and problems tug at our hearts from every direction. These things cause us to get off track  just like the devotion story I shared about my daughter getting distracted on the treadmill.

When we realize we are distracted and not making God a priority every day, there are steps we can take to get back on the right spiritual track in our daily life. And with respect to this week’s focus on vacation, the distractions of time away from our normal routines can make distractions get even worse! Sometimes while on vacation, although we have a great time, we forget to stay on track with our faith walk and may never think about intentionally taking God with us.

The responsibility of packing usually always falls into the lap of the woman. We have to make sure everyone has everything they need, while also packing for the unexpected.  Yet sometimes we can pack every single thing we need for vacation – except God.

Although we may be going on vacation, we never want to take a vacation from God.  But I have to confess, I have done so on more than one occasion. Some vacations are schedule free and relaxing, while others are filled to the brim with activities and schedules. In either case, we have to deliberately commit to spend time with God and make Him a part of our week.

We can’t pack God in our suitcase, but there are some things we can do to make sure that we feel His Presence with us everyday. Even when we are home from vacation and deep into our regular busy life, it’s important to focus on avoiding distractions so we can avoid spiritual stumbles: Below are 5 tips (plus one bonus!) for staying on track with Christ, on vacation and every day:

* Intentionally pray for your family and your travels before you leave.  Pray for your vacation to be a time where you draw closer to God and each other.  When vacation is over, continue to pray for your family daily.

* Pack your Bible and a journal.  I love to read books when I’m lounging at the pool or the beach and usually pack several new novels or non-fiction books to take with me on vacation.  But it’s even more important to pack my Bible, and make sure I read it first each day.  Keep a journal of all the ways God speaks to you on vacation and during your quiet time. Packing a story Bible to read to the kids before bed each night. And consider keeping a bible in your purse, or downloading it on your phone, Ipad or Kindle so that God’s Word can be with you everywhere you go.

* Look for examples of God’ goodness and beauty during your travels and point them out to your family. Help your family remember God while away by remaining aware of His creations and blessings and always giving Him the credit.  Sometimes we overlook the beauty that we see ever day, so make a personal commitment to stay aware of your surroundings. Occasionally talk with your family about how God is blessing you that week while you are away, and keep it up when you return home.

* Check out local places of worship at your vacation destination. For example, the beach we frequently go to has a worship service on the beach every Sunday morning during the summer. I always feel blessed and inspired if I make a point to attend service, much moreso than if I had just slept in late that day because I was on vacation.

* Be aware of opportunities to share the love of Jesus with others. If you strike up a conversation with a waitress or hotel clerk and God opens a door to share, be ready and willing to do so.  Ask God to help you always stay aware of opportunities to share.

* Say a blessing or pray before each meal, just as you would at home.

These are just a few thoughts to consider, but there are many other ways to incorporate God into your time away. Vacation time is one of the few times where we aren’t pressured by work, deadlines, and business and have time to really commune with God. It’s the only time we can actually check out from real life, but we don’t want to check out spiritually.

baditudesThanks to Speaker and Author Cheri Gregory, I have a special bonus giveaway this week!

ALWAYS take my IPad which has a great Bible app BibleScope. It makes it so easy to access scripture. AND Proverbs 31, of course. I’m a morning girl, but I remind myself my time with my Lord can be whenever I can tear myself away from the gkids. Gotta have my Jesus !

I love to walk or hike in Colorado. One can’t herlp but feel the presence of God in all of the beauty of his creation. It is so glorious to be in the mountains knowing He created all of that beauty.

  3. Aida on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:19 am

Vacation means school is out! Early morning devotions at home without rushing. Family vacation means early morning devos by the ocean feeling God’s presence in His creation. Love the vast ocean it’s power and the peace I feel.

  4. Heather on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:22 am

I have everything on my phone–bible, devotions, etc. Also, we do a daily family devotion/activity, and we take it along and do it on vacation. At campgrounds, we made a point to attend their Sunday services. I like your reminders, though!

  5. Sarah on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:23 am

While on vacation I usually go on walks early in the morning. It’s my time to talk to God each and everyday. It’s what I look forward to most.

  6. Michele on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:35 am

I am a visitor from Proverbs 31 this morning – thank you so much for sharing. I often think it is only me – and beat myself up about not maintaining this important relationship everyday as well as I think I should.

When away from home it is often the opportunities I have to share Christ with others that makes my connection grow stronger. The stranger in line at the hotel, or a waiter at a restaurant, that I can speak encouragement to help me feel that I have not left Christ behind.

  7. Frances Y on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:37 am

I take daily walks to enjoy the beauty in nature, and read a daily devotion.

  8. Melissa on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:39 am

Whenever I am away from home, and also, while at home…. I like to open the door each morning and say, “Thank you, God, for this beautiful morning.” 🙂

  9. Karen on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 8:49 am

I LOVE to wake up at 5, grab a cup of coffee, my Bible and head to the porch of wherever I am at. When at beach I smell the ocean, here soft waves and watch the majestic sunrise. It’s so quiet cause no one is up and it’s the time I feel closest to Him. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thanks for all those insights. I love where we try to encourage the people around us, and attending a church. Very fun thoughts. Thanks for all you guys do.

  10. Emily on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:00 am

Just returning from a wonderful vacation with my family, my favorite thing to do was stay on course in my Bible study that I am doing with my ladies group at church. After everyone was in bed, I loved to sit on the porch and spend time with the Lord. It kept me grounded while away from my daily routine and blessed me in so many ways!

  11. Leigh F. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:08 am

I take my bible and get up before everyone else. While it is quiet, I like to step outside and enjoy the beauty surrounding me as I read God’s word.

When traveling for work (a frequent event in my life), I pick out a short reading plan on the Bible App. I use the reminder feature to alert me at a specific time each day to open the app and read the devotional and the associated scripture. There are many 5 and 7 days plans available. This approach is especially helpful when carrying extra books along with work materials in my carry on bag is not feasible.

  13. Christina Burrell on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:14 am

Keeping up with my devotions, listening to praise music in the car, praying often.

  14. Cindy on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:15 am

I write in my gratitude journal….both big and small things.

  15. Tammy on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:15 am

I always continue my devotion/Bible reading whenever I go away; whether on business or personal vacation.

  16. BEVERLY SHOOK on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:19 am

Getting up earlier then our seven year old can be challenging. But this summer
He has slept in more often then in years past. In the quiet of the morning whether I am sitting out side our vacation condo or going on a walk. This is the best time for me to have
Quiet time with God while on vacation. Traveling in the car with the kids you can have
Great conversations about who God is and the world He made for us to enjoy. Being intentional about our relationship with God is what is important.

  17. Tory P. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:19 am

Taking opportunities to get outside enjoying the beauty of God’s creation. There is something about being away from all the daily noise to just be still before the Lord listening to His voice, reading His word, and talking with Him.

  18. Courtney on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:22 am

Whenever I’m traveling, I always pack my iPad so I can check my email and get the daily devotional from P31 and various spiritual blog postings. I also have the bible app on both my iPad and iPhone. However, I’m old school and love to have my bible with me so I can highlight and make notes.

  19. Kelly Willie on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:22 am

I have taken vacations where I feel actually closer to God than at home. The beauty and experiences wherever we go always bring me closer to Him. We have a Harley and I love the wind blowing in my face and being that close to everything He created!

  20. TIna R on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:24 am

I have a little file card container that I keep in my purse (purchased from staples for a couple of bucks) it comes with little dividers. I have a feeling on each divider, and the cards in that sections reflect verses for that particular feeling. I pull the box out and look at the verses and repeat them to help me through whatever feeling I am having. Plus at the front I have verses that I am trying to memorize.

I have my Scripture index cards on a little ring, but they get kind of beat up in my purse. Thank you so much for the case idea!!

  21. Kristy on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:31 am

Always pray and continue to see God’s beauty in nature and how He works in my life.

  22. Vanessa Criswell on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:37 am

When I’m away from home, I try to get some time alone with God outside, whether it be a walk in the forest or sitting under the moon at night. I need to remember how small I am and how big God is, that He really is in control. Thunderstorms especially fascinate me because they demonstrate a power that can’t be harnessed or fathomed. In watching them, I am literally and spiritually blown away by Him and His majesty.

  23. Kelly on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:38 am

I have the bible on my phone & enjoy reading scripture & an encouraging word each morning. If we are gone on a Sunday morning, we try to get in a little word from somewhere. We also love listening to gospel music, so that helps us out as well. We, as a family, love God & everything He does for us as a family.

  24. Cristi on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:40 am

This couldn’t have come at a better time as we are getting ready to leave on vacation. Great reminder to make sure I pack my journal and book. I have a Bible on my Kindle and iPhone and several devotions on my iPhone that I enjoy reading each day. Love the idea of talking with the kids about God’s beauty around us while we are away.

  25. Stephanie on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:45 am

Smart phones are wonderful things- I check out my bible iPhone app while away from home. Great way to stay connection, especially when time is short!

  26. Nancy on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:47 am

This is one of the first things I read this morning (after reading all the God related FB pages on my tablet) before beginning to get the house ready and then packing for our vacation to start tomorrow. So perfect timing. 🙂 I have several FB Christian pages that I have liked and am blessed to be able to start with those posts at my fingertips while at home and try to think about what those random posts might mean to me for that day. However, I will not have internet access while away so will take your suggestion to start with the Bible I have downloaded on the tablet. Also wherever we are our youngest always reminds us to say grace before we eat (sometimes we get so busy we are famished by dinner and impulsive rather than reflective) and we are consistent about remembering that it is God’s handiwork when we are surrounded by the beautiful nature we encounter.

  27. Dawn Parrish on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:51 am

I love my Kindle for keeping with me on vacation – it is an easy and quick way to have the Bible at my fingertips, along with other books I am reading. Also, I can’t usually sleep in when traveling – so I love to sneak out early in the morning to just look at the morning sky, since I don’t always stop to do this at home, it is a beautiful reminder of all He has prepared for us.

  28. Cheryl C. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:55 am

I’ve been successful staying close to God on vacation by having access to Christian television programming in the hotel room as well as quiet time and using my cell phone to read my e-mail devotionals. I love being away from the daily grind as a way to reconnect. 🙂

  29. Barb on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:55 am

I take a devotion book with me and read that day and look up the scripture
on my iphone which gets me to read my bible. I all pray when I wake up and reach my hands over my head
In the shower reaching out and praising God. I also read proverbs 31 emails . I try to remember
To say I am trusting Jesus

  30. Kristen Cook on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:59 am

We are about to go on vacation and we will be with other family. I plan to make sure that I don’t stay up too late every night so that I can still get up in the morning and have a quiet time. also being on vacation with family can be helpful, because when the kids get up early they can go be with Grandma and Grandpa giving me some extra time to have my devotional in the morning. I also tend to feel closer to God when I am able to take a walk outside when the weather is nice. I expect to be able to spend more time with God on vacation more so than when it home. My husband and I listen to sermons or worship music in the car when we are driving on a trip. For this trip I had our kids make a little scrapbook and I am going to encourage them. to not only draw and record fun things they do in the book but also things they are thankful for that God has given

  31. Lynn Graham on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:05 am

I stay with my bible study that I am doing whether it is one with my church or one I’m doing on my own or both plus the online bible study.

  32. Tracey M. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:09 am

We all bring our Bibles and the Kindle. We have a free app that helps us memorize scripture while gone. We also pray and say meal blessings. I would love to win this set of cards. I could always use some encouraging words while away at home. Thank you.

  33. Maria G on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:10 am

I use my Iphone to go through my daily devotions. Although I don’t spend as much time on them. But do make sure that I say a pray too

  34. Sarah N on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:11 am

Reading my daily devotional on my phone is great, but also as we travel and see new
things and surroundings I am in awe and praise God for his creation and his creativity

  35. Delinda Mauney on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:15 am

We are going on vacation in a couple of weeks. My grown children go with us (except my youngest son who is in Louisanna getting ready to go to Guam for the Air Force) along with my grandson who is 3 and keeps us busy. My favorite vacation spot is the beach. I can sit for hours just looking at the magnitude of God’s creation. The mighty strength of the ocean is so amazing. I love getting up early and sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee and a devotional book. Although sometimes it is hard with a little one getting up early, I still try to have some quiet time and will have to work harder at it this year. Cards with reminders during the day at strategic spots would be wonderfully helpful in reminding us how amazing God’s creation is. I call these little reminders as God’s love letter to me. They are around us every day if we only look for them.

  36. Renee on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:16 am

Staying spiritually connected while on vacation has always been tough for me. But this last time when we were on vacation I brought my bible and devotional. Every morning/evening I would go sit on the balcony and look out into the sunrise or sunset, I saw God in a special light. I felt so close to God that week. I was away from the everyday distractions which helped grow my relationship with God. Was my vacation free from worry or upsets, no they werent. (really i have three teenagers, of course things didnt go smooth). But what i remember most about that vacation was all the beautiful pictures God personally painted for me in the sky and how my walk with him has forever been changed.

  37. Paige on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:20 am

I love the idea of finding God’s glory while on vacay and pointing it out to the kids. I always try to do this with my boys. Life is so hectic most of the time, but when we go hiking, to the mountains or the beach, we need to stop sometimes and see the clouds he formed and the beauty around us. I always try to impress on my boys that God made this just for us right at that instant! Thanks for the tips!

Staying spiritually connected while on vacation is something that I have prepared for as I get ready to go on a short vacation. This time it is just a vacation for me, (the first one in 25 years) and I have my bible downloaded to my phone and set for me to get a message every morning to not forget to read my Word for the day. I will try to tell as many as I can about the love of Jesus and how He can make you new. I will be going to a new city I have never been so I believe God is going to use me in a way He never has and this will be a transformational vacation for me to draw closer to Him.

Enjoying God’s nature and thanking him for it is a wonderful way!

  40. Rhonda Cotton on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:38 am

Thank you Tracie. For years I have been having a special time to separate and be with Jesus every morning. This continues on vacations. I love sunrises and worship Him when I see that beautiful sight. Sitting quietly by the seashore I ask God to speak. He always does!

  41. Alana Slocum-Dotson on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:40 am

When on vacation, I love admiring God’s handiwork in the skies. I’m fascinated by His sunrises, sunsets & the moon & stars. To see how the sunshine mixes with the clouds, giving off so many different colors or how the moon & stars light up the darkness with the help of the sun’s illumination is simply amazing to me!

  42. Kate on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:45 am

I take my Bible and journal with me wherever I go – that way when I have a “God moment” or just some down time, I am prepared for it! Listening to my family enjoying themselves at the beach, visiting extended family, and simply being togther (away from the constant schedule of home) helps put God’s work in perspective for me.

  43. Gen on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:50 am

My Bible and book bag is the first thing I pack. I carry pens, journals, highlighters, note cards to write my thoughts and special scriptures. I always carry inspirational books along with my favorite bible. Each day I arise early before anyone else and watch the sunrise. Afterwards I spend time reading, praying and meditating. It is a great way to begin each day, just me and My Father!!

  44. doris snider on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:52 am

I always have a bible themed book with the corresponding workbook. Everyday I do a lesson and carry a reminder index card with me for the day to cement the thoughts. It makes for a more peaceful vacation and helps to keep me less stressed. I just keep repeating the word…..and I sure need to!
Thanks for the great thoughts on the site!
    God Bless You all

    • Kari on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:14 pm

I love the idea of the reminder index card! I have so many insights during devotional time, but in a couple hours I can’t remember what I read….thanks for sharing!!

  45. Amy Johnson on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:52 am

I enjoy sitting on the balcony before everyone gets up and reading my Bible and devotion book. The early morning calm starts my day and I am overwhelmed by the greatness of God’s beauty.

  46. Karen on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:53 am

I always carry my bible and journal.

  47. angie steffen on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:54 am

I have my phone w/ me all the time. When on vacation all i have to do is out outside and see all the beauty. I write a lot while on vacation, I seem to forget some of the lil things. I write it in a scrapbook, and the kids bring it out and laugh about whatever.
If I start to feel stress, or angry I look up different verses and take a moment to think about what I just wrote. I just started faithfully reading my bible and doing a devotion, my husband and children all see a different me. I came to proverb 31, and when I read one of tracies devotions I went to her blog and found the stress free devotion boy have I felt so much peace! God bless to you all,

We do not go on vacation, but when I go see my family that live in another state on weekends I will usually go to church with them on Sunday before I go back home. If I go to someones house that does not go to church then I will set and read my Bible and sometimes talk to them about the Bible.

My husband and I always pack our Bibles and devotional books to take on vacation. I take my journal to write in while I am on vacation. We have our quiet time with God before we leave our room.

  52. Briana on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:42 am

I always have my bible app on my phone, and my daily devotion is set to wake me up with an audible alarm at 6am before even my earliest riser can sneak in for morning snuggles. That gives me the right start to the day even when we are away from home.

  53. TABITHA JONES on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:46 am

I have already had my summer vacatin this year. We took the family to Pigeon Forge. Just getting out and enjoying Gods creation if enough to know there is a God. I usually try to get up earlier than everyone else and have my quiet time outside enjoying his creation.

  54. Polly Schneider on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:49 am

I pack my Bible and devotional books. I spend time in the morning after breakfast even if it is only a few min. We go camping so we are out in nature which makes it easy to thank God for the beauty of His creation.

I love to vacation at Christian family camp, mine being Camp of the Woods in Speculator NY, but there are many all over. You have a chapel service of some kind, daily, and you have sports activities to do and food prepared by others, and it’s just always been a vacation on purpose to rest and grow.

  56. Barbara on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:57 am

My hubs and I were just discussing this as we are getting ready for some seriously needed time away. We are taking a kids story/devotional book and are using a devotional app for our mornings. Though we’ve always prayed and listened to the Bible on cd when traveling, this is the first time we’ve intentionally planned materials to utilize. This is a timely subject and one we really need to consider when leaving home. Thanks!

  57. Kari on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:12 pm

We are going to the beach for a couple days, so I’m planning to pack my ipod with Joyce Meyer podcasts, so that I can walk along the beach, marvel in God’s beauty and listen to His word.

  58. Rhonda on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:30 pm

I wish I could say I was dedicated to reading my bible and my devotional books while on my vacation. Actually for all my good intentions I find that the Holy Spirit has been convicting me for not doing this. But in my travels my one constant is Sunday Mass. I’ve experienced this divine gift in tiny lakeside churches in Michigan, in a pewless basement church in Scotland and celebrated in St. Peter’s in Rome, itself. Most recently I attended Mass in Mexico and though most of the words were foreign to me, their meaning was not. Jesus shffered, died and rose for my salvation. Wherever in the world Mass is celebrated it is that same sacrifice and my heart soars with that truth.

  59. Josie on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:38 pm

I have most of my devotions and my Bible reading plan on YouVersion and make a point to continue waking up earlier every day as I do at home and spend my time with God in prayer, devotion and reading His Word.

  60. Halona Luna on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:45 pm

I take my bible with me. I would love to win the scripture cards.

  61. Bettie Green on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:50 pm

I find vacation is the perfect time to memorize Scripture. I may get pulled away from my usual Quiet Times by time with not often seen family, but I can use either Scripture memory cards or a printout of a chapter of the Bible tucked into my purse, to memorize Scriptures that I have been drawn to during the year.

As we travel, the whole family can get in on the memory track. Everyone wants to help ‘Grandma B” memorize! Plus, introducing a verse to memorize opens the door for the Holy Spirit to prompt rich discussions for all ages.

  62. Alicia on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:55 pm

Stay Connected by just praying every day that no matter where I am at that I never forget what he gives me!

  63. Jenny on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:02 pm

I do several things to stay connected…keep a verse or two in my suitcase, my Bible phone app, and then grab a small devotional book like Jesus Calling to keep close by. Of course, if I choose to not go technology-free, I read my various e-mails from the Proverbs 31 ladies. Blessed and surrounded!

  64. Lynn W. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I have a Bible app on my iPad and am able to read it at any time. Very convenient when trying to pack light. I also get up before everyone and spend some quiet time reading a devotional and praying.

I read my Bible devotional while enjoying nature. I love to listen to the birds sing while sitting in my garden.

  66. Michelle K on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:17 pm

Great new suggestions! When we’re away from home, sometimes I’ll plug in to worship music to connect, I continue the bible reading plan (via iPad) and because we are so very fortunate to be able to just take a vacation I look for ways to bless others each day and encourage my kids to do the same. It might be making a waitress/housekeeper laugh, a frustrated Mom trying to get the sunblock on her child or engaging other kids that look like they’d love to be a part of whatever we’re doing at the time. Beginning to do this on vacation has started to transition into a great daily activity. At the end of the day we each have an opportunity to talk about our “blessing” story- did we bless someone, or how did someone bless us.

    Good Morning Tracie,
I am currently on vacation! Though our technology can sometimes be a distraction I love being able o receive P31 devotions are one resource I use to get me moving in Gods word. It amazes me how often the devotion applies directy to my circumstances whether it be teenagers, marriage or career. Thank you for sharing and sacrificing your precious time to help grow us, your readers.

  68. Nicole on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:19 pm

I needed the reminder to look for God’s goodness & beauty – both when on vacation & at home. Thank you for that, Tracie. I plan to use our travels as a special time to reflect on the world around us & the grace of God within it all. I’ve always thought about brining the bible (app) for me, but not for my daughter. When we are at home, we read each night – why not use that time even when away to share the word of God…?? I am looking forward to planning our next trip around Him!!

  69. Patti on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Thank you and I wish I could afford to do the electronic devices or phones mentioned above. HOWEVER, I do always pack at least the small mini-devotion booklets that you can get free at church. Also I may take along verses that I have copied onto 3 by 5 cards. Often my ‘pleasure’ reading is a religious book anyway like one from you at Prov. 31. I have journaled for years. Since my mind is distractible it centers my prayer life and I keep them and enjoy looking back over them to see how God has answered prayers. In journal I have started where in the back going backwards I may write down songs or tidbits I hear on the radio, etc. This may help someone like me who is always losing scraps of notes scribbled. I would LOVE to be the chosen person to receive the gift but I also realize that GOD will pick that randomly with you. THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS inspiring me and I suggest to other readers to get the Prov. 31 “Encouragement for Today”.

  70. Kelly B on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I was very blessed to get the little Bible app on my phone that has opened doors to some wonderful small devotionals. That app has helped keep me connected to the Lord not just when I am on vacation, but even when I am stuck in a less than stellar time in line. God is so good. I love finding any moment to reach out to Him. I love the ideas you gave though. I’ll be honest, I would love to take a full on God only vacation and spend some time at a hotel with just me and God.

  71. Amber M on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 1:43 pm

I agree that my Bible app on my phone has been a huge help staying connected and close to God. Its always there when i need it and I am so glad to have it to turn to at any time day or night no matter where i happen to be. I love that i can search the bible too for a word or a phrase that God puts on my heart or for scriptures I’m trying to recall. It even helps when my 6 year old had random questions about God or Faith. What a blessing it has been from the world of technology!

  72. Jamie Taylor on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:05 pm

I have the you version bible app on my phone which comes in very handy when out and about. On my recent trip to Africa, I also brought along my Jesus Calling. It is a great reminder to me that Jeus is with me wherever I go. I also try to look for God in the beauty of His creation. It was easy to see God daily in the beautiful faces of the children in the orphan home where we worked too. They have so little yet are so happy and thankful for everything. Running water and electricity are not essential for their happiness.

  73. Ellen on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I have downloaded a bible on my Nook and a bible app on my iPhone. I also have my Jesus Calling devotional at hand every day. Having these with me helps me to spend time with God every morning.

  74. Jenn on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:45 pm

I bring my kindle which is loaded with lots of nonfiction christian and my Bible!

  75. Diamond Jernigan on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 3:21 pm

When I am away from home, even when I was in the hospital having my babies, I packed my Bible in my things. I always read His word every day to keep me close to Him. I then pray to Him to guide me throughout each day of my vacation or time away, whatever it may be. This keeps me aware of Him daily and let Him be in control and not myself.

  76. Mrs. B on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 4:17 pm

I usually take whatever my devotion book is at the moment. I also research churches in advance to visit in the area I’m staying.

  77. Momma Shoe on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 4:42 pm

I always pack a devotion book for my kiddos for us to do together as a family–that way, if it gets too crazy for me to find “quiet time”, I’ll still be able to have some kind of time set aside to connect with God (quiet or not:) .

  78. vicki on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 5:02 pm

as I get ready for vacation , (road trip),i begin to pack my huge book bag -which is actually a fun, large beach bag-with my Bible and other pertinent books ,to be prepared for anything, everything ! 🙂 it’s always a comfort to have God’s Word with me and to see it in print when it may be harder to recall in the midst of things ! 🙂

  79. Tracy on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 5:15 pm

Vacation is when I often best connect . I have you version on my phone and Divine Offices on my iPad as well as my pile of waiting-to-be-read- books and my no tech journal. I love to find a beautiful (preferably outdoor) spot for early morning devotions. If vacation includes a Sunday I enjoy worshipping as a guest someplace new with no responsibilities .

  80. Lori A. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 5:49 pm

I take my devotional and Bible with me and try to do like at home and do them first thing in the morning before the day gets crazy.

  81. Ellie on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 5:50 pm

We find a place to worship on the Lord’s Day in advance and we have nightly devotions as we have done since our children were little. They’re 20 and 23 now. We’ve always made it a priority, no matter where we are.. Even when our kids have their friends over, they experience our devotion time with us. My husband usually makes cookies when we have guests at devotions. 🙂

  82. lrf on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 5:51 pm

I would suggest adding “Bible” to the list (if you don’t have a trip list start one:) that you use when packing for yourself and the family. That way you won’t forget to bring it. Having a cup of coffee while having devotions is a great way to wake up.
Here’s a note that has to do with church while on vacation: if there is not a church available you can either watch a sermon online or have your own “church” read something to the kids that is one their level & have a “Sunday School” or if just two adults you can read a passage of Scripture together then sing and pray together. The important thing is to just make sure time with God is a priority no matter where you are.

  83. Laura on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 7:33 pm

This is something I have made a priority as I have grown in my relationship with God. I always pack my Bible, a devotional (or 2 or 3) and make sure I still get up early to have my quiet time each morning. As a family we say prayers at meals and I often point out the beauty of Creation around us.

  84. Dawn Shpudejko on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 7:41 pm

I always bring my iPad with me which has my bible on it as well as four devotionals which I do every morning. After breakfast, both my husband and I have our quiet time with the Lord.

  85. CarrieC on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 9:22 pm

I always bring my Bible, devotional book and journal with me on vacation! I’ve had some of the best times with God on vacation!

  86. Kelly on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:11 pm

I don’t always do this, but it’s helpful to me to find a “different” location when on vacation to meet with God.

  87. Mary T on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10:26 pm

Tracie, I don’t vacation away from home, but I do travel occasionally and I always take my Bible, my Word Among Us daily readings and meditations, and my very old book “God Calling” by A J Russell, so I can start my day exactly as I would at home. Last trip was during the SLL OBS so I packed my book and my journal too! Happy and blessed weekend to all!

  88. MissyB on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:35 pm

I take my Bible, journal and praise music on my iPod. Take time in the morning to read outside. Enjoying Gods creation outside and at the beach. One thing I am trying to learn is to enjoy the present. Don’t be in such a hurry and miss beautiful things, moments, actions, children, husband, and love – many more things I have probably missed only focusing on the goal or end result. Enjoy the gift of the present, carpe diem (seize the day)!

  89. Miranda on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:02 am

I have downloaded a bible app to my cell phone really cool

  90. Deb on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:16 am

I take my Bible and devotionals with me whenever I go on any kind of trip and make that time a priority, even if it’s not exactly quiet. 🙂

  91. Tami on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:16 am

I keep an old Upper Room devotional and small bible packed in my suitcase ready to go for every trip. I try to start and end my day reading and praising God.

  92. Anna on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:21 am

I have a small bible in my purse, take it everywhere. When we go camping, I take my bible, journal and devotional, and spend my time with the Lord before we get ready to go fishing. Then I praise Him for the beauty of His creation which I am blessed to enjoy…I also do a lot of praying when we are out in the quiet, relaxing. Can’t wait for the next camping trip! :o) God is good.

  93. Lana on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:08 am

I have several devotions and bible apps on my phone. This way I always have a bible and can start out my day with God. I also enjoy just sitting and being quiet while I listen to praise and worship music.

  94. Tracy on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 5:09 am

I love to talk with God and read His Word while in nature. I love to appreciate creation on a break away from the demands and noise of this life.

  95. Iesha on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 7:19 am

    Tracie:

While I took my mini vacation, I took my kindle with me. It has the different versions of the Bible on it. While I did not read it, I did manage to get to a computer and read some verses and a devotion from Proverbs 31 ministries and boy I was sure glad I did. The devotion was EXACTLY what I needed.

Yet, I did do some of things you suggested, such as seeing the beauty in God’s creation and taking time to pray before each meal. I never saw things as ways to incorporate God into you everyday life. I thank you for opening my eyes to that truth.

  96. Shelly Kincaid on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 8:37 am

My family and I took a huge vacation this year. We traveled across the United States from Ohio to Arizona to the Grand Canyon. It was an amazing vacation. While we were on our vacation, we talked about having God moments in our lives and looking for God moments every day. Looking for ways God had protected us that day or how God had brought people into our lives for certain situations. For example, my husband asked me to drive part of the way. I was ok with that somewhat but a little nervous because we were pulling our camping trailer. I prayed, “please God don’t let me have a blow out on our trailer while I was driving, but if we do, please let us be close to a Walmart.” Funny, how we pray those crazy kind of prayers. Well, I didn’t have a blow out, but as soon as my husband took over, we did. And believe it or not, less than a mile from Walmart. God took care of us and protected us and even provided for us. That was just ONE of our God moments on that amazing 3 week trip. It was really neat to share all this with our kids and see how God became real to them as well.

  97. Monica on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 8:46 am

There are mission opportunities everywhere you go. Last summer while I was traveling with a group of teenage boys, we encountered a homeless man when we stopped for gas. At their suggestion, we went to a nearby restaurant, bought him a meal and prayed with him. I shared this experience with some of their parents by text messaging to let them know how proud I was of them and when we returned home, we found out that some of them had been led, by our example, to do the same thing.

  98. Karen H. on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 9:56 am

Before my husband and I leave on a trip, we sit in our car and pray to ready ourselves for our adventure, be used by God, protection for our home, us and family, etc-however He leads our prayer.. Then we keep a travel journal, including the ways we have been blessed by the Lord on our way. It is amazing how God blesses us with help just at the right time, or putting people in our path to be a blessing to. Because I have arthritis, I take a warm bath at night to help me relax and sleep. It is there I find alone prayer time with my Jesus. Also have a bible app and devotional apps on my Kindle.

  99. Danielle on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 11:25 am

On vacation, I take my bible with me. I also bring books and my computer where I can get devotionals to read.

  100. Kim on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:00 pm

I often fail to stay spiritually connected while I’m on vacation. Next time I am out of town, I plan to read my devotionals and always remember to pray during daily moments.

  101. Amada (pronounced: a.m.a.th.a) on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:22 pm

I usually remember to take my Bible with me and I try to pray even more. Especially if I fly or have extra time because we’re driving. I also listen to my music more and that includes artists like Kari Jobe and Francesca Battistelli 🙂

I would LOVE to win on of those I think they’re great! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

I would love to wind I have a problem with remembering verses

  103. Kara on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 6:36 pm

When my family travels its usually by van so I love to stay connected to God through worship music while we are in the car or listening to K-Love radio! Once to our destination walks remembering God’s creation and my journal time. I always read my 31 Ministries devotional before I get out of bed in the morning too!

  104. Jena on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 7:34 pm

I love taking a walk with my headphones and favorite worship or instrumental music. It is so fun to take in the unfamiliar sights to to the tune of some of your favorite songs. The headphones also come in handy to download your pastor’s sermon while you’re away 🙂

  107. Amy on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 8:01 am

I usually pack a bible to take along. I will confess, it rarely ever gets taken out and used though. We always seem to be in a hurry to get to the next thing. We leave tomorrow for a short trip, and I am going to make it a point to do a devotional before I leave my room. WIth blessed technology, I will be able to access one on my kindle. Thanks for nudging us to remember to make sure God goes with us!

  108. Ashley Byers on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 10:53 am

While on vacation, silence and solitude is my go-to God time. There’s so much to worry about when at home so when I’m on vacation, I can clear my mind of the clutter and fill it with praises. I love to wake up early and sit on the balcony and either listen to the big city as it wakes up or listen to the oceAn as each wave speaks His name.

  109. Charlotte on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 11:09 am

While on vacation I try to set an example for our children and my husband and I bring our devotion books and bibles, and we make sure the kids pack theirs. I have my Bible on my iPad, as well as receive Tracie’s daily devotions and the Proverbs 31 daily devotions electronically. Yesterday I loved Tracy’s devotion so much titled, “How to Avoid a Spiritual Stumble” that I shared it out loud with my three children when they woke up. We also make sure that our personal quite time with God comes before any activity we have planned. I also wake up about an hour before everyone else to have the time alone with God to pray and read His Word. If I don’t do this, the needs and demands of my family and the plethora of activities just get in the way and it wouldn’t happen.

  110. Amy on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 11:43 am

I really struggle with spending alone time with God on vacation. We usually go to the beach with my husband’s parents, brothers, their wives, and all of our children. We stay in a big house together and quiet time of any nature is difficult to find. I try to keep it simple to stay on track. I take walks on the beach alone to talk with God and sing worship songs. Also, I try to read just a few verses each day and reflect on them in my journal. It is amazing how much easier it is to get along with my in-laws when I stay in God’s word:)

  111. Julie G on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 4:33 pm

I have to confess up front – I am a technophobe! I had to get my god-daughter to set up my iphone for me last year when I changed contract and got updated from a regular, “non smart” phone (does that make it stupid?) Anyway, one of the first things she showed me how to do was download apps, including books. So I now have about 4 different translations of the Bible available to me as well as some of my favourite books in ‘e’ form – What’s So Amazing about Grace? If you want to Walk on Water etc. I can now also get my daily devotional emaiIs from Proverbs 31, BibleGateway and UCB on my phone so I don’t have to be at home with access to my PC. I can dip in and out of the Bible and devotionals as and when I need a spiritual fix through out the day, no matter where I am. It also lets me share with my friends via email or Facebook if I come across something I think is particularly relevant for their situation or as God is apt to do, remind me or reinforce something we have been discussing recently.

  112. Amanda on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 8:15 pm

I like to find a quiet place to reflect on the vacation and current surroundings to praise God for all He has done, made, and enabled us to do. Thank God that He is always with us anywhere we go.

  113. Lindsey on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 11:12 pm

I like to pray for an opportunity to serve together and then look for it while on vacation. Whether it’s giving some food to a homeless person you drive by (we always pack way more than we need!) or stopping to help someone carrying a huge load…. besides the obvious quiet times, praying for- and seeing- opportunities to serve while on vacation together can help create more special memories from the trip.

  114. Amy on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 12:06 am

Hi. I’m deaf myself. I go to a church with deaf ministry. So, during my vacation recently, I like to read devotions on my iPad also to watch deaf mission daily devotional vlogs. It helps me lots because sometimes my kids watch it with me. Because its hard to find a local church with deaf ministry. Praying for God to open more doors for deaf ministries all over the world.

  115. Cindy on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 4:19 pm

I like visiting churches when we are on vacation. I also take my Bible and try to read it every morning before joining those with whom I am traveling/visiting. God’s creation is so awesome – I am thankful for the five senses with which to enjoy it. Praise Him!
