Loving Life Is A Choice, Even When Life is Hard

As I mentioned in today’s Proverbs 31 devotion, I totally understand what it feels like to turn the calendar over to a new year, and instead of feeling expectant and excited , feel consumed with grief, disappointment and fear.  Believing with all my heart and mind I would never be able to feel truly happy again, much less love my life.

January 2016, a few months after my husband left mine and my children’s lives, was probably the worst beginning to a new year I’d ever experienced, as I was still reeling with shock and fear about my shattered life. Each followed January, I tried to have a positive attitude, thinking ‘this will be the year things go great’, only to discover each year held its own set of overwhelming and seemingly insurmountable problems.

Yet over time, through a lot of prayers, tears and faith, God helped me see and accept that although I couldn’t change my circumstances, I could change my attitude and how I lived each day. I finally realized I had been given one life to live – this life – and I could either continue to allow adversities, disappointments, and the hurtful actions of other people to control my happiness, or I could embrace God’s promise for abundant life and make it a reality in my own.

And that’s exactly what I did. I chose to love my life, even though it wasn’t what I had imagined it would be, and God has blown my socks off with his protection, love and faithfulness. And now He has – once again – turned my pain into purpose!
